I felt as if I were reading about my home town. I could pick out the characters as he described them. I laughed, cried and completely enjoyed this book.
very hard to read...boring
Bill Holm is (was) a national treasure. His writing is heartfelt, insightful and courageous. Reading this gem I came to love the crusty old immigrant Icelanders who populate this rich landscape. Worth every second I spent on each page.
Mr. Holm spoke at my college years ago, and I took an American literature class in which his published work was studied. He was an insightful, gifted author and storyteller. His work is well worth reading.
I would recommend this book to anyone, He was a great writer.

Bill Holm captures the time, the place and the people of his Minnesota home and Icelandic ancestors beautifully and honestly. His writing is crisp but somehow musical. After reading his book The Windows of Brimness I couldn't wait to read more from him.
